My son Ethan is participating in the Movember Foundation’s
November 2014 drive to “change the face of men’s health prostate cancer |
testicular cancer | mental health.”
Particpants commit to
growing a moustache during the month of November, and subscribing friends and
family members to promises of assistance to the Foundation.
My son, very
flatteringly, says this in his Movember webpage:
BEGIN QUOTE:
MOST PERSONAL MOTIVATION FORPARTICIPATING IN
MOVEMBER IS MY DAD,LEW. ALTHOUGH MY MOM WON’T EVER LET HIM GROW A MUSTACHE, HE
TAUGHT ME HOW TOBE A GENTLEMAN. I WOULD LIKE TO HONOR WHAT HE TAUGHT ME AND USE
MY FACE (WHICH LOOKS REMARKABLY LIKE HIS FACE), TO HELP HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT
HEALTH ISSUES THAT WE ALL FACE. I BELIEVE STRONGLY INRAISING AWARENESS OF
PHYSICAL HEALTH “MENTAL WELL-BEING.”
END QUOTE
I did take a crack at growing a ‘stache, but frankly
– even in retirement – I did not have the patience, or the memory; I kept
forgetting, and shaving it off in the morning, meaning I had to start over and
over again so I finally deferred to my son’s capacity to cultivate tonsorial
adornment, abandoning all hope that I might match his effort.
I’m posting this in the hope that addresses might
throw some pocket change at Ethan’s effort.

I’m proud of his effort, and humbled by the way he
thinks of my fathering. I clearly did
good work as Ethan is repeatedly finding ways to exercise his inventiveness at
raising money for such profound causes.
Thanks for your attention.
V/R,
Lew Stern
